Over the past four decades, Desulco® has been successfully used as an inoculating carbon in cast iron. Based on University studies* where Desulco® was compared against various recarburizers with differing crystallinity, such as petroleum coke, or graphite electrode scrap, it was discovered that Desulco® showed the biggest nucleation improvement of the melt, resulting in optimum chill depth ...
Barium containing ferrosilicon inoculant for cast iron also has a strong ability to promote graphitization, which can improve the shape and distribution of graphite in thin walled castings, and it also has the effect of slowing down the growth and decline.

An inoculant is a material added to the liquid iron just prior to casting that will provide a suitable phase for nucleation of graphite during the subsequent cooling. The purpose of inoculant is to assist in providing enough nucleation sites for the carbon to precipitate as graphite rather than iron carbide .
